The True Lesbian Love Story Behind Wonder Woman You Never Knew
Hey queens (and everyone else who stumbled here),
If you thought Wonder Woman was just another comic-book badass in a star-spangled swimsuit, buckle up, because the real origin story is way gayer than DC ever let on in the 1940s… and honestly, it’s one of the hottest, most revolutionary lesbian love stories Hollywood has ever put on screen.
I’m talking about the 2017 hidden gem Professor Marston and the Wonder Women – a film that finally told the truth about William Moulton Marston, the Harvard psychologist who created Wonder Woman, and the two brilliant, gorgeous women he loved: his wife Elizabeth and their mutual girlfriend Olive Byrne. Yes, you read that right. A polyamorous, BDSM-inspired, queer-as-hell throuple living together in the 1920s-40s, raising kids, and secretly shaping one of the most iconic female superheroes of all time.
Let’s be real: this movie is lesbian catnip.
You’ve got Luke Evans as the charming but slightly clueless professor, Rebecca Hall killing it as the fierce, dominant, take-no-shit Elizabeth Marston (who was apparently the real brains behind a lot of the Wonder Woman philosophy), and Connie Britton as Olive Byrne – the sweet, submissive student who completes their little family. The chemistry between Elizabeth and Olive? Electric. The first time they kiss in that sorority office… girl, I had to pause and fan myself.

The film doesn’t shy away from it either. We see them flirting, experimenting, falling in love, and yes – having smoking hot three-way scenes that somehow made it into a mainstream(ish) movie in 2017. There’s bondage (Wonder Woman’s lasso didn’t come out of nowhere, honey), spanking, role-play, and so much tension you could cut it with Diana’s tiara.
But what gets me every single time is how tender it all is underneath the kink. These three people genuinely loved each other in a time when being openly queer – let alone poly – could destroy your entire life. They lost jobs, got ostracized, had to hide their relationship for decades… and still chose each other. Elizabeth and Olive continued living together as a couple for almost 40 years after William died. That’s lesbian devotion right there.
And the craziest part? Wonder Woman herself is literally their love letter to the world. The submission/domination themes? Straight from their bedroom. The idea that loving submission can be strength? That’s Elizabeth and Olive’s relationship in a nutshell. Diana Prince is basically the child they dreamed up together – fierce, compassionate, bisexual lighting in a corset.
Honestly, watching this movie as a lesbian feels like reclaiming something that was always ours. Growing up, we were told Wonder Woman was just a “strong female character” for straight feminists. Turns out she was created by a lesbian power couple (and their boyfriend). The queer roots were there the whole time, hidden in plain sight.
If you haven’t seen Professor Marston and the Wonder Women yet, do yourself a favor and stream it tonight. It’s sexy, it’s smart, it’s heartbreaking, and it’s one of the few Hollywood movies that actually respects lesbian desire instead of making it a phase or a plot twist.
And next time someone says Wonder Woman isn’t queer… just smile and whisper, “Honey, she was literally invented by two badass lesbians in a poly relationship. Fight me.”
Who else is obsessed with this movie? Drop your favorite Elizabeth/Olive moment in the comments – I need to know I’m not the only one rewatching those scenes on repeat.
Happy pride (every month, always),
