Mormon No More: The Lesbian Awakening I Didn’t Know I Needed
Okay, ladies (and everyone who loves ladies), let’s talk about something that hit me straight in the queer heart: the 2022 mini-series Mormon No More on Hulu/Disney+. If you’re a lesbian who grew up in any kind of conservative religious bubble, or even if you didn’t, this four-episode docu-series is basically mandatory watching. Trust me.
The show follows four incredible women — Sal, Lena, Gwen, and Margot — all former members of the LDS Church (you know, the Mormons) who realized they’re lesbian (or in some cases bisexual with a heavy lean toward women) and decided to leave everything behind: the church, their marriages to men, sometimes even parts of their families… just to live authentically. And honey, as a lesbian who’s had her own “oh sh*t, I’m gay” moment, watching them was like looking into a mirror I didn’t know existed.
What got me the most? The sheer courage. These aren’t 19-year-old baby gays sneaking out to their first pride. These are grown women — moms, wives, pillars of their communities — waking up one day and saying, “I can’t do this anymore.” Imagine being married for 10, 15, 20 years, having kids, and then realizing the love you’ve been told is sinful is actually the most real thing you’ve ever felt. That scene where Lena meets her now-wife for the first time? I had to pause and ugly-cry into my hoodie. Same when Sal talks about finally kissing a woman after decades of repression. My lesbian soul was screaming “YES GIRL, GET YOUR GIRL!”
The series doesn’t sugarcoat anything. It shows the ugly parts too — excommunication threats, husbands who range from heartbroken to outright cruel, kids caught in the middle, parents who say “we love you but…” (you know the type). But it also shows the joy. The first pride parades. The first real kisses. The first time someone calls them “wife” and it actually feels right. That’s the stuff that made me text every lesbian in my group chat at 2 a.m. like “DROP EVERYTHING AND WATCH THIS.”
And let’s be honest, as a lesbian, I felt seen in a way I rarely do in mainstream media. We’re not the side character dying in episode three. We’re not the punchline. We’re the entire damn story. These women are messy, brave, funny, devastated, and absolutely radiant when they finally step into who they are. It’s raw, it’s real, and it’s so deeply lesbian in the best way possible.
One thing I kept thinking: this could’ve been me if I’d been born into a different family. The shame, the prayers to “fix” yourself, the fear that God hates you for loving women… it’s universal for so many queer people raised in strict religion. But watching these women choose themselves? That’s healing. That’s hope in four episodes.
If you’re a lesbian who’s ever felt like you had to hide, shrink, or apologize for existing — watch this. If you’re dating a woman who’s freshly out of the church (hey, we all know one), watch it together. If you just love a good coming-out story with happy(ish) endings and cute lesbian couples holding hands by the end — watch it immediately.
Mormon No More isn’t just a documentary. It’s a love letter to every lesbian who thought she was alone in her faith and her desire. And spoiler: we’re not alone. We never were.
Stream it. Cry. Text your ex. Then text your girlfriend and thank her for existing. You can thank me later ♡
(Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to rewatch episode 3 for the fourth time and sob happily into my iced coffee.)
