Petra & JR: The Hottest Lesbian Romance in Jane the Virgin (A Lesbian Fan's Unfiltered Obsession)
Listen. I’m just going to say it straight (well, not straight): Petra Solano and Jane Ramos (JR) are the reason I still think about Jane the Virgin in 2025 like it aired yesterday. Yeah, the show is about a virgin who gets accidentally artificially inseminated (iconic), but let’s be real — the minute Petra started thawing that ice-queen heart for JR, the entire series became the best unintentional lesbian comfort show of the 2010s.
I binged all five seasons three times, and every rewatch I fall harder for this couple. So here’s my completely unhinged, very gay love letter to the lesbian storyline that nobody saw coming but every lesbian needed.
Petra starts the show as the ultimate villain-turned-antihero. Cold, calculating, Eastern European accent sharp enough to cut glass, married to Rafael for money and power. She’s terrifying and delicious. And honestly? Peak “I hate everyone except maybe this woman** — classic lesbian vibe from day one, we just didn’t know it yet.
Then season 4 happens and they introduce Jane Ramos — JR, the tattooed, badass lawyer with a jawline that could end wars and arms that make you forget how to breathe. The chemistry was immediate and lethal. The first time Petra looked at JR like she was a puzzle she actually wanted to solve instead of destroy? I paused the show and stared at the ceiling for ten minutes. That’s real.
What makes this ship so perfect for lesbians is how adult it feels. No coming-out melodrama, no tragic ending, no “will they/won’t they” for five seasons. They meet, they clash, they hook up, they fight, they go to therapy (Petra in therapy is lesbian culture), and they actually work shit out. Petra, who spent years manipulating everyone, finally chooses to be vulnerable with a woman who sees right through her bullshit and loves her anyway.
And the physical intimacy? Jesus take the wheel. The show never shied away from showing them in bed, kissing like they were trying to win an Olympic gold in tongue hockey, hands everywhere. For a CW show in 2014-2019, that was revolutionary. We weren’t getting crumbs — we were getting the whole damn cake.
Let’s talk about the scene in season 5 when JR shoots the blackmailer to protect Petra. Petra’s face in that moment — pure “I have never been loved like this in my life” panic — lives rent-free in every lesbian’s head who watched it live. I sobbed. My group chat exploded. Someone made a 47-second edit set to Halsey within 24 hours. That’s power.
Even the breakup (temporary) was perfect because it wasn’t because one of them “wasn’t sure about being with a woman.” It was about real issues — trust, past trauma, fear of happiness. You know, the shit actual lesbians deal with.
And the reunion? When Petra runs through the airport and they kiss in the rain like it’s the end of a 90s rom-com? I have no notes. Perfection. Yara Martinez (Petra) and Rosario Dawson (JR) acted their asses off and gave us the happy ending we rarely get.
Also, shoutout to Luisa Alver and her chaotic disaster lesbian energy with Rose (Sin Rostro). That toxic mess of a relationship was like watching your ex text you at 2 a.m. — painful but impossible to look away from.
Look, Jane the Virgin is a telenovela parody first and foremost. It’s ridiculous and over-the-top and the narrator is a national treasure. But somehow, in between the twins-switching, the crime-lord reveals, and the plastic surgery plot twists, they gave us one of the healthiest, hottest, most rewatchable lesbian relationships on television.
If you’re a lesbian who hasn’t watched it yet, fix that immediately. If you’re a lesbian who has watched it, you already know Petra and JR invented love.
I’m just going to be over here rewatching season 5 episode 16 for the 400th time and pretending I’m okay.
Drop your favorite Petra/JR moment in the comments — I need to know I’m not alone in this madness.
