Why Every Lesbian Needs to Watch Ride or Die (2021)

Hey queens, it’s your favorite unhinged sapphic blogger back with the movie that still lives rent-free in my head in 2025.

Let’s be real: most lesbian movies either give us soft cottagecore vibes or tragic 1950s repression. Ride or Die said fuck that and dropped a full-on erotic thriller where two women are violently, obsessively, hornily in love and one of them literally kills for the other. And yes, it’s messy, toxic, and I ate it all up with a spoon.

Rei (Kiko Mizuhara looking like she walked straight out of every lesbian’s wet dream) has been in love with Nanae since high school. Ten years later, Nanae shows up at Rei’s door covered in bruises from her piece-of-shit husband and basically says “help.” Rei doesn’t call the police. She grabs a scalpel (she’s a plastic surgeon, iconic) and handles it. Then they run. That’s the first 20 minutes.

What follows is 2+ hours of the most intense wlw chemistry I’ve seen in ages. These women fuck in cars, in love hotels, in abandoned houses, while covered in blood, while crying, while screaming at each other. It’s raw. It’s ugly. It’s hot. It’s everything Hollywood is too scared to show when they make “lesbian” movies.

Kiko Mizuhara and Honami Sato have insane sexual tension. Like, I paused the movie several times just to breathe. The sex scenes aren’t soft-focus, “tasteful” bullshit – they’re sweaty, desperate, sometimes borderline violent, and 100% feel like actual queer sex. Anyone who’s ever been in a toxic situationship knows exactly what this feels like.

Yes, the relationship is toxic. Rei is obsessed to the point of self-destruction. Nanae is traumatized and manipulative. They hurt each other constantly. But that’s what makes it feel authentic? Most of us have been in versions of this love – the one that feels like it’s killing you and saving you at the same time.

People complain it’s “too much” or “problematic.” Good. Lesbian stories don’t have to be wholesome to be valid. Sometimes we are the villains of our own stories. Sometimes we’d literally kill for her. Ride or Die doesn’t judge its characters for being fucked up – it just shows them as they are.

Also, can we talk about how rare it is to see Asian lesbians centered in a major film? This isn’t some side character with 5 minutes of screentime. This is two Japanese women being unapologetically gay, sexual for the entire movie.

If you like your sapphic content dark, bloody, horny, and emotionally devastating – this is your movie. If you need your lesbians to be perfect role models who communicate healthily… maybe stick to The L Word re-runs.

Final verdict: 9.5/10 – losing half a point only because I’m still recovering from that ending.

Watch it on Netflix right now and then come scream in the comments about how Rei could ruin my life any day.

Drop your favorite scene below (no spoilers for new viewers please!). Mine is definitely the gas station one… you know the one.

Lots of gay love,

Your problematic fave ♡
